Family Archeology Project (Dated June 30, 2022)

The Nunatsiavut Government Archaeology met with 7 members of the Hebron Selection Committee yesterday to discuss the Hebron Family Archaeology Project.

They are hoping to take place on July 27 to August 3, 2022. (Alternate August 3rd to 10th, 2022).

This year, it was decided for the committee to vote from the list of relocatee’s still living which is now less than 60 people.

The committee also decided to vote for 4 relocatee’s instead of one with 3 family support.

Once the vote is tallied, we will notify everyone.

The NG Archaeology will be looking to hire some support staff for the week of July 27 to August 3 (alternate August 3 to 10). Keep your eye out for updates.

Makkovik ICG (Audio) (Dated June 30, 2022)

The community of Makkovik are waiting on a contract for engineer work.

We spoke with Barry Andersen who is the AngajukKâk.

Andersen says there will be work done on the sewer outfall, and they are in the process of hiring on 4 summer students for the Makkovik recreation department.

Nain Canada Day Events

Here are more of the Canada Day events for Nain.

On Friday, July 1st, the Vehicle Parade will be taking place starting at the Airstrip at 12pm.

There will be prizes for Best Decorated vehicle, stroller, bike, and pet, with a prize of $25.

The Best Dressed individual in Canadian Colors will win a prize of $200, and judging will start right after the parade.

You must register by 4pm on Thursday, June 30th by calling 922-2690 or 2691.

At 1pm, there will be a free barbeque at the hut sponsored by VALE, serving hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, and treat for children 12 years and under.

Peddle boats will be available for rent at the Old Dam from 1:30 to 5pm.

Rental fees will be $5 per person with a time limit of 15 minutes, and life jackets must be worn.

Please do not bring personal items to the boat as they will not be responsible for lost or damaged items.

Family games and events will be taking place from 1:30 to 4pm for the age groups of 2 to 4, 5 to 7, 8 to 12, 13 to 54, and 55 and up.

There will also be pull tab tickets for sale of 50 cents each.

The fun games for everyone will be Musical Chairs, Tug O’ War, Elimination, Head/Knees/Toes, Dizzy Race, backwards Running Dizzy Race, and Flipper Relay Race.

At 2:30pm, there will be a Canada Day Cake Decorating Contest with prizes of $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd, and $25 for 3rd.

Canada Day in Postville

The Postville Recreation have set a schedule for the 2022 Canada Day for their community.

Jacqueline Harris is the Recreation Assistant Director.

They will start the celebrations with a scavenger hunt, starting at 10:30am.

At 2pm, will be the parade, everyone is to meet at the community Centre for judging of the best decorated vehicle, ATV, bicycle, stroller, person and cake.

There will be assorted games at the ballfield at 3:30pm.

The community will be having a BBQ starting at 4:30.

At 10:30, the day will end with fireworks.

There will be more details for Canada Day from Harris as the day gets closer.

26th Annual Youth Symposium

The Annual Youth Symposium will be held from July 11th to 15th, 2022.

The planning committee consists of staff and youth; Heather Angnatok – Regional Youth Administrator, Kayla Wyatt – Food and Environment Program Coordinator, Michael Mitsuk – Hopedale Youth Outreach, Joni Sillitt – Youth Worker, Nicolas Flowers – Youth and Ocean Pottle Shiwak – youth and Kim Oliver – Regional Youth Services Manager.

They roughly have 20 youth from within Nunatsiavut, Upper Lake Melville and the Canadian Constituency, and 1 elder from each community in Nunatsiavut, including Upper Lake Melville to attend.

They will also have Beverly Hunter who is the Elder Coordinator who will be assisting and planning with the team as well, along with a variety of guest speakers.

The Youth Symposium’s focus this year is Language and Culture.

They will have a land-based day and Joan Dicker will speak and present the Inuktitut sessions.

The Symposium had been previously delayed due to COVID-19 and the restrictions in place.

They look forward to meeting all the participants and to help create connections and memories, bring awareness on the importance of our language and culture, and keeping our traditions strong.

Increase Coming to Income Supplement and Senior’s Benefit

Starting on July 5, 2022, residents in Newfoundland and Labrador who receive the income supplement and seniors’ benefit will receive a 10 percent increase in their quarterly payments.

Approximately 162,000 individuals and families receive the income supplement. This funding provides up to a total of $1,000 per year for a family of four.

Over 50,000 seniors and their families receive the seniors’ benefit, and eligible individuals will receive up to $1,444 annually.

No application for the benefits is required, however, eligible individuals must ensure their annual income tax return is filed in order to receive the benefits; eligibility is based on family net income from the previous year.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing increases in the income supplement and seniors’ benefit as part of its overall plan to help residents with the cost of living. Since March 2022, government has announced $222 million in targeted short- and long-term investments.

More information on the income supplement and seniors’ benefit, including a calculator, is available on the gov.nl.ca website.

Trades NL (Audio)

Trades Newfoundland and Labrador is an umbrella labour organization that promotes and coordinates 16 building and construction trades.

They help and support individuals with employment.

Scott Hudson is the Employment Outreach workers for Trades NL.

He says he will be holding an Open House this evening in Nain.

At the Nunatsiavut Government Administration building, from 6-8pm tonight.

Trades NL, affiliates, represents thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans working to gain employment within our province.

Nain Canada Day Events

Canada Day this year will be celebrating the 155th birthday of Canada on Friday, July 1, 2022.

The Recreation Department has some events planned for Nain starting on Thursday, June 30th.

There will be men’s and women’s volleyball tournament starting at 6pm with a maximum of 6 players and minimum of 4 players, and winners will receive $30 each.

Anyone interested in participating in the tournament can contact Gwen Dyson.

On Friday, July 1, there will be a Community Breakfast from 8am to 9:30am at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre, serving sausages, bologna, boiled eggs, toast, and oranges.

A Canada Day Family Photo Scavenger Hunt 2022 will be starting at 10am until 11pm, device needed.

You can register by 4pm on Thursday, June 30th at the JS Centre or call 922-2690 or 2691, and must meet at the JS Centre at 11am.

1st place will win $150, 2nd place $100, and 3rd place $75.

From 10:30am to 3pm, a fishing contest will be taking place and awards will be given for the heaviest and most fish.

Persons wishing to register for this competition must call the JS building by 4pm on Thursday, June 30th.

If you are not registered at the JS Centre, they will not accept your fish.

Please bring your fish to Edward Harris at the sports field at 3pm where judging will take place.

Please note that fish must be caught by rod, and any small fish will not be accepted for most fish.

Nain Recreation Summer Positions

The Nain Recreation Department are looking to fill various summer student positions for this Summer.

We spoke with Lisa Ivany who is the Nain Recreation Director.

She says they had to extend the deadline for many youth positions.

Right now, they are looking for youth from the ages of 15 years and up.

Youth must have a Social Insurance Number and a clear Code of Conduct.

The positions to fill are a Seniors Program Coordinator, Seniors Recreation Coordinator, Summer recreation workers.

Ivany says they only have 1 student that applied.

If there are any students or post secondary youth interested in applying for any job positions with the Recreation Department are asked to get in contact with Lisa Ivany or Mary Maggo at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

Community Freezers

OK Radio called each of the community freezer’s along the coast to see what they got to offer.

There is nothing in the Nain community freezer, but donations are always welcome.

The Hopedale community freezer has some moose meat.

There is cod at the Postville community freezer.

There is a box of smoked char and some artic char at the community freezer in Makkovik.

OK Radio will see what the community freezer in Rigolet has to offer when they get back to us.
