Archeology Family Project (Audio)

The Hebron Family Archeology project will be held from July 27 to August 3rd, this year.

We spoke with Lena Onalik who is the Archeologist for Nunatsiavut Government with the Department of Language, Culture and Tourism.

Onalik says right now they will have a maximum of 4 relocates for this year’s project.

Rhubarb Festival Next Week

It is one week away for the 16th Annual Rhubarb Festival in the community of Hopedale.

This festival began in 2006 through the partnership of Community Youth Network and UjagâKutit Recreation Committee.

Doris Boase is one of the organizers for this year’s festival.

The festival will be from July 11th, until July 16th, 2022.

Some of the activities will be Fear Factor, a community bbq, bake-offs, a beauty pageant, and more for the community to have fun and enjoy.

There is one door prize for all participants to have a chance to win.

We will have more information from Boase about the schedule when the festival begins.

Increase Coming to Income Supplement and Senior’s Benefit

Starting tomorrow, July 5, 2022, residents in Newfoundland and Labrador who receive the income supplement and seniors’ benefit will receive a 10 percent increase in their quarterly payments.

Approximately 162,000 individuals and families receive the income supplement. This funding provides up to a total of $1,000 per year for a family of four.

Over 50,000 seniors and their families receive the seniors’ benefit. Eligible individuals will receive up to $1,444 annually.

No application for the benefits is required. However, eligible individuals must ensure their annual income return is filed in order to receive the benefits. Eligibility is based on family net income from the previous year.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced increases in the income supplement and seniors’ benefit in March 2022 as part of its overall plan to help residents with the cost of living. Since March 2022, government has announced $222 million in targeted short- and long-term investments.

Postville By-Election Preliminary Results

The Nunatsiavut elections officer wishes to advise Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement of the preliminary results of July 1st by-election in the Constituency of Postville for Ordinary Member to the Nunatsiavut Assembly:

George Gear 45

Voter turnout: 53 per cent

The votes will officially be counted early this week, at which time a candidate will be declared elected.

The Nunatsiavut elections officer wishes to advise beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement that George Gear has been elected Ordinary Member for Postville. This follows the official vote count for the by-election in the Constituency of Postville for Ordinary Member to the Nunatsiavut Assembly that took place on June 30th.

NG Assembly Sitting Schedule

The 5th Nunatsiavut Assembly Sitting is taking place in Hopedale once again and will be held just for the day.

They started this morning at 10am and here is the agenda:

They start off with a prayer, opening address by the President, Recognition of Visitors Gallery, and Oath of Office – Ordinary Member for Postville.

They will also do the selection of First Minister, then Minister’s and Members’ statements, returns to oral questions, oral questions, written questions, and returns to written questions.

Petitions and responses to petitions, reports of standing and special committee, tabling of documents, notices of motion, notices of motion for first reading of bills, motion, and then first reading of bills.

They will then do the second reading of bills, assent to bills, and end off the day with adjournment.

Nain Hope Walk (Audio)

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development held their annual Hope Walk last week.

We spoke with Rutie Lampe who is the Mental Health and Addictions worker.

Lampe says they met at the DHSD building at 8:30am on Thursday, June 30th, 2022.

They had 5 participants this year.

She adds that this was the first Hope Walk they held during the summer months.

Science Camp in ULM (Dated June 30, 2022)

The Memorial University (MUN) Campus in Labrador partnered with different organizations to go with a camp next month.

McKenzie Hutchings is with MUN.

This will be a hands-on science learning and training camp celebrating the Labrador lands and waters, based in the Upper Lake Melville region.

This will be for youth in Labrador going to Grades 8 up to Grade 11 in September 2022.

Children will learn about plants, animals, farming and soil, culture and archeology, the marine environment, and science and technology.

The camp will be from July 18 to 22 with no fee to participate.

Makkovik Canada Day Events (Dated June 30, 2022)

The Makkovik Recreation also has events for Canada Day on Friday, July 1, 2022.

Their day will start with a parade at 11am meeting at the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School, and head on to Indian Head to raise the flag.

There will be prizes of $50 for anyone who got the best decoration bike, the best decorated stroller and best decorated vehicle for children 5 years of age and younger, 6 years to 9 years, and then 10 years to 13 years of age.

There will also be a cake decorating contest with the prizes of $50 for having the best decorated cake, best themed cake, and most creative cake.

They will then go to the arena to play games of golf, ring toss, dart the seal, dart throw, plinko, and bouncy castle with a fee of $1.

The Recreation Department will have a BBQ outside the arena from 12 to 2pm with hotdogs, hamburgers, juice and pop to be served, and prizes will be listed.

The day will end off with fireworks at 10:30pm.

Canada Day in Hopedale (Dated June 30, 2022)

The community of Hopedale has activities planned for Canada Day tomorrow, July 1, 2022.

Danielle Pottle is one of the organizers.

She says Canada Day will kick off with a parade.

There will be judging of the best decorated stroller with a prize of $50 and a gift basket, the best decorated bicycle will get $50 and a gift basket, the best decorated ATV will get $100, and the best decoration car or truck will win $100.

The best decorated vehicles will be announced and will make their way through the community.

There will be a flat race at the small dock starting at 2pm, all participants will have their team entered for a prize of 10 gallons of gas.

The team must consist of one female and one male, one member must be between the ages of 16 years to 49 years, and the other member must be 50 years of age or older.

1st place winners will get $300, 2nd place winner gets $200, and 3rd place winners will get $150.

There also will be a Canada Day best decorated cake contest.

Participants have until 12pm on Friday to submit your cakes; all cakes will be auctioned off after the contest and proceeds will go to the recreation.

1st place winner will get $150, 2nd place will get $100, and 3rd place will get $75.

Nain Canada Day Events (Dated June 30, 2022)

Here are more of the Canada Day events that will be happening in Nain.

Tomorrow at 2:30pm, there will be a Canada Day Softball Tournament 2022 at the Sports field.

Teams must consist of at least 9 players and a maximum of 11, and winners will receive $50 each.

Please register your team with Recreation Assistant, Edward Harris.

At 3pm, a Cardboard Boat Race will be taking place at the playground.

Boats can contain cardboard, tape, or glue, and must be decorated in Canadian colors.

The prize for the best decorated boat in Canada Day colors and theme will be $100.

A Giant Canada Day Radio Bingo will be held at 5pm with $100 cards, $200 games, $1000 mini jackpot, jackpot to go for $5000, along with 50/50 tickets of $1 each.

Cards will be selling from 9am to 4:30pm at the Nain Husky Centre.

There will be community dance and games for everyone from 7 to 9pm at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

Every game you participate in gets you an extra ticket for a door prize draw, with prizes that will consist of a $50 gift card from Northern and Frank’s General Store, a 20-inch bike, and 10 gallons of gas plus two new gas tanks, and door prize draws will be at 8:45pm.

To end off the day of events, there will be fireworks taking place at 11pm sponsored by the NICG Recreation and Volunteer Fire Department, and volunteers are welcome.
