Dead Humpback Whale

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) helps to ensure healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystems through habitat protection and sound science.

DFO is aware of the dead humpback whale in Northeast of Dog Island.

We spoke with Kevin Guest who is the Communications Advisor with Fisheries Management.

He says they do not know the cause of death but there are no obvious signs of gear entanglement.

DFO reminds the public that physical contact with whale carcasses is discouraged due to the possibility of disease transmission or injury.

If individuals come across a dead whale, they can report it to Whale Release and Strandings Newfoundland and Labrador (Tangly Whales Inc.) at 1-888-895-3003 or 1-709-895-3003.

With regards to the clean-up, generally, if a dead whale is beached:

•Within a municipality/city – the Municipality is responsible.

•On crown land – the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is responsible; and,

•Within the boundaries of a National Park — Parks Canada is responsible.

High Efficiency Woodstove Program Update

The Nunatsiavut Government would like to update residents of the five Labrador Inuit Communities on the situation regarding the High Efficiency Woodstove Program.

For the last several years, we have been using the Blaze King- King 40 as our preferred woodstove for the program due to its high efficiency rating and long burn times. Following the recent inspections and training from Wood Energy Transfer Technology (WETT) technicians, we have been advised to use a smaller stove that is more suitable to the square footage of the average home in Nunatsiavut.

Since this has come to our attention, the Nunatsiavut Government has been working diligently with these experts and using their advice and recommendations to select a better suited stove and to ensure we have the right materials to install them correctly.

All applications for this year of the program have been reviewed and there is no need to reapply. We will contact the successful applicants in the coming weeks to let them know they have been selected. When delivery times of all woodstoves and materials are confirmed, we will reach out again to discuss installation.

The High Efficiency Woodstove Program is of high importance to the Nunatsiavut Government and we will strive to get this program back on schedule. Our focus is to deliver this program successfully, without compromising the quality and safety of the installation.

Dying and Dead Birds

Dying and dead birds are being found in Newfoundland, this has been going on for the last two weeks.

Chris Mooney is the Interpretation Officer for at the St. Cape Mary’s Ecological Reserve.

He said testing has been underway to determine the root cause of the die-off, on Thursday he added he believes Avian Influenza is to blame.

Mooney has been working on the Reserve for 21 years and there has been no word, but the tests should come back soon.

He said he don’t know how long it takes to spread and hopefully it doesn’t spread too much and lose a lot of birds.

Mooney said its not good because we can’t do anything for them. We can just watch and count numbers, talk to the Canadian Wildlife Service and University’s biologist Bill Montevecchi and the head office. And Perter Corcoran said there are almost 300 counted.

He said some wash up on the beach and some come alive and die in ten minutes. He has lived in Port Lance for over 50 years and he has fished for 35 years and have never seen anything lie this.

Corcoran added they’ve seen murres and even puffins on the beach.
