Third Day of the Salmon Festival

Today, Friday, July 29th, 2022 is the third day of the Salmon Festival for the residents of Rigolet.

At 2:30pm, there will be a lollipop scrabble for children and youth ages 18 years and younger at the net loft.

There will be a salmon cooking contest starting at 4pm, participants must submit their prepared salmon at the net loft for judging.

From 8pm to 12am, youth will have their dance with DJ Jason Thistle.

The theme for the dance is to dress in neon, with a $2 entry fee for kids and $3 for adults.

Infants ages zero up to children in grade 3 will have their dance from 8 to 9pm, children from grade 4 to grade 6 will have their dance from 9 to 10pm and anyone in grade 7 to grade 12 with people who are 18 years of age and older will have their dance from 10 to 12am.

Canteen and glow sticks will be sold and a parent or a babysitter must accompany infants ages zero to four years of age.

Tomorrow, Saturday, July 30th, is the last day of the festival.

At 9:30am, registrations are open for the Rigolet Challenge.

Booth Games will start from 10am to 12pm with $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.

The Rigolet Challenge starts at 10am tomorrow morning for anyone 19 years of age and older with a fee of $5 per person.

Teams must consist of a maximum of three players.

Anyone 19 years of age starts their water relay at 1pm at the net loft.

At 4pm, there will be a Miss Pretty Piggy contest for anyone 18 years of age and older.

The Salmon Fsetival Take-away Supper will begin at 5pm.

Fireworks will begin at 8:30pm at the docks.

The BYOB Party will start at 10pm until 2am with DJ Jason Thistle.

There’s a $10 entry fee and anyone can dress up from the decade you were born for the theme of the party.

Tickets will be sold tomorrow from 10am to 12pm at the net loft and 8 to 9pm at the community hall.

COVID Vaccines for Children

Please be advised that COVID vaccines clinic for children ages 6 months – under 5 years will take place the Nain Public Health office, starting Tuesday, August 16th.

Vaccine clinic dates are as follows:
Tuesday, August 16 from 1:30- 7:30pm.
Thursday, August 18 from 1:30 – 7:30pm.

MP Jones Announcement

Member of Parliament (MP) said yesterday, the fibre op to the home of the south coast was announced couple days ago, and updated the Labrador Straits communities.

Fibre connectivity to the home contract was awarded to Bell Aliant and will be completed in 24 months currently approval is granted to all those along the fibre line they built in partnership with Bell Aliant a few seasons ago.

The communities of Lans Au Clair, Foteau, English Point, Lans Aux Loup, Capstan Island, West Sainte Modeste, Pinware, Red Bay, Lodge Bay, Mary’s Harbour, Port Hope Simpson, Charlottetown, are all on the Fibre to the home program.

Completion year is 2024 . The other communities are part of a fixed wireless network, and they are currently working on the connectivity for those communities.

Torngat Secretariat Update

Torngat Wildlife, Plants and Fisheries Secretariat reported the have completed it’s 2022 installation for Arctic char monitoring at the Fraser River.

With a research camp built and ARIS sonar imaging equipment trials in 2021, they are ready for a season monitoring char movement up stream.

The install team was Jacob Edmunds, Northern Peaks Ltd: Arthur Walsh, Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Cailin Murray and Craig Taylor, Torngat Secretariat: Adam Templeton, Marine Institute.

Makkovik Snow Crabs Landed

The Makkovik fish plant has a busy summer this year.

Angel Chaulk is the Clerk.

She says a total of 92,633 lbs. of snow crab has been landed since yesterday.

Chaulk says they have 34 plant workers hired, and 11 of those are summer students.

One snow crab was unloading it’s catch yesterday, and two other boats are out fishing.

The MHA for Torngat Mountains, Lela Evans has been focusing and concerned about accessing good health care services on the north coast.

We spoke with Lela about her concerns.

She says everyone needs to speak up about their concerns and issues when it comes to good quality health care.

kANGIDLUASUk Summer Student Program (Audio)

The kANGIDLUASUk Summer Student Program will be traveling to Base Camp this week.

We spoke with Megan Dicker who is the Youth Leadership Program Coordinator.

She says they have youth between the ages of 15-30 years from all Nunatsiavut communities including the Canadian Constituency.

Dicker adds that the youth will be learning how to connect to our language, culture and with outdoor activities, along with traditional skills.

Nain Fish Landing

The char fishery in Nain is going very well to date.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Supervisor of the fish plant.

She says a total of 16,204 lbs of char has been landed with 8 char licensed fishermen. There are 26 employees working and 3 of those are summer students.

Kohlmeister added the scallop landed remains the same as last week, green scallops 2,608 lbs. Thie Torngat 1 scallop long liner is gone fishing for the first time due to fog that couldn’t lift for days.

Day Two of the Salmon Festival

The Salmon Festival in Rigolet is on their second day of the four-day festival.

The community of Rigolet started their Canada Day celebrations at 1pm until 2pm.

At 2pm, anyone 19 years and older will play some 120 card games.

Registration for the Cardboard boat race will open at 2:30pm and the cardboard boat race will begin at 3pm.

Sponsored by Vale, they will be hosting a BBQ at 4:30pm, along with Cutting the Cake.

Tonight, starting at 6:30pm at the community hall, adults will play games such as three-high dart, money ring toss and prize dime toss.

Tomorrow, Friday, from 10am to 12pm will be booth games, air brush tattoos, and a bouncy castle.

There will be a fee for children of 50 cents and $1 for adults.

BYOB tickets will also be sold.

At 1pm, merchandise bingo will start for anyone 19 years and older, water relay starts for anyone 18 years of age and younger at the net loft, and anyone 13 years of age and older will have a badminton tournament.

Teams will consist of two-on-two with a $5 entry fee, and winners will take half of the money taken in.
