Update Forest Fires on Island

There are encouraging signs coming out of central Newfoundland, as fires seem to be remaining stable in size.

Firefighter crews were conducting assessment last Friday, however, Provincial Fire Deputy Officer Jeff Motty said overnight reports suggest that the fires have remained stable, with 4 fires on the board.

Motty said they hope to declare a fire near Deer Pond as out one they’re able to do a visual assessment. 3 are still labeled ‘out of control’, but Motty feels they have turned a corner.

He said they have been in initial attack mode, but are on the bubble of swithing to a sustained attack, which involves containing the fire and cleaning up the perimeter.

Motty said the Paradise Lake and Bay d’Espoir Highway fires will take a bit longer to change from their out-of-control status, however, he’s hopeful they can make a status change on Southern Lake Access Road fire.

He said they directed a significant amount of resource on that fire, as they focused on Southern Lake when it was too dangerous for crews to fight the larger fires.

Wreck of HMS Raleigh

Them Days Incorporated says after 100 years, divers went in the deep waters to see the HMS Raleigh.

The divers went near the Point Armour Lighthouse in Southern Labrador for their first dive.

The first Royal Navy intentionally destroyed the wreck in 1926, then salvagers further blew the wreck apart to recover the guns, brass propellers, anchors, brass and copper hardware. The wreck is now beaten flat on the bottom and is a debris field of scattered parts.

A huge shipwreck site is more than 150 meters long. They obtained an archeologist research permit from NL Archeology Office in order to dive on this wreck. They disturbed nothing and recovered nothing from the wreck.

They remember the 11 Royal Navy sailors who died when the ship was lost on August 8, 1922. Full marks to the Point Armour Lighthouse Historical Site which interprets the shipwreck site for the public.
