Coastal Fishing 1979 (Audio)

There are some interesting stories from in the kinatuinnamut ilingajuk magazine from along the coast.

On August 24, 1979, there were some results from the fishery in Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale, and Davis Inlet.

The types of fish included char, salmon, brook trout, slinks, codfish, and rockcod.

CYN & Mr. Volleyball Tournament Results

This year marked the 12th annual MR. & CYN Volleyball tournament in Nain.

The tournament was a big success this year, it began on Friday, August 19th, 2022.

We spoke with Gwen Dyson who was one of the organizers for the event.

She would like to say congratulations to all the winners and thank you all for making CYN & Mr. another successful tournament.

This year’s winners for the women’s division are as follows:

1st Place winners went to Mister’s Girls, 2nd place winners were the Chaos team and third place winners went to Attack Pack.

For the Male division, the first-place winners were the Killzone team, 2nd place went to Holy Moly team and third place went to Shaman Boys.

For the MVP Female on Team Chaos went to Briana Wolfrey.

MVP Male on the Holy Moly team went to Curtis Dicker.

Most Sportsmanlike Female went to Hopedale’s Ashley Abel.

Most Sportsmanlike Male went to Clayton Lidd.

Most Sportsmanlike Team Female Team Hopedale.

Monkeypox Vaccine Available for Individuals

As of yesterday, the Labrador-Grenfell Health is providing the Imvamune vaccine for the Monkeypox virus to eligible individuals. The eligibility list for this vaccine is based on what we’ve learned from other areas of the country experiencing this outbreak.

The Monkeypox Imvamune vaccine is available to:

• Two-spirit people, transgender people, and cisgender males who self-identify as belonging to the gay, bisexual, queer, and men who have sex with men community, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
• Have had sex with two or more partners in the last 90 days, or planning to do so;
• Have received a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection in the last six months;
• Have attended, worked, or volunteered in venues or other locations for sexual contact within the past 90 days or may be planning to do so, whether in or outside of the province.

The vaccine will also be offered to sexual contacts of individuals in the above eligibility groups as well as to people who engage in, or plan to engage in, sex work.

If you live in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region and are eligible for the Imvamune vaccine, contact any LGH Public Health office for an appointment.

Your vaccine appointment will be booked once you identify as being eligible. You will not be asked for information about how you are eligible.

If you believe you have been exposed to Monkeypox and/or are experiencing symptoms, contact your health care provider or call 811 to arrange for assessment and testing.

New Labrador Coastal Service

The reservations line is quite busy and during peak times the wait time to be answered can be long.

Because of this and the requirement for reservations to travel, Labrador Marine has implemented a waitlist registration procedure.

It is intended to help those looking secure reservations for travel and to ensure customers who have a need to travel in the short time; example, if a flight gets cancelled or plans change and a customer cannot reach reservation office.

While Labrador Marine does require reservations for travel, they recognize that a person’s circumstances may change and need to travel on short notice.

If you are registered, they will accommodate access to travel at any port, subject to passenger limits.

Please note that they cannot guarantee cabin or vehicle space with waitlist registration.

Note to travel to/from Cartwright is only possible to/from Rigolet or Black Tickle.

Travel to/from Black Tickle is only possible to/from Goose-Bay, Rigolet or Cartwright.

Request to/from those port to/from other ports will be cancelled without notice.

Nunatsiavut Housing Commission Open House

The Nunatsiavut Government is working to establish the Nunatsiavut Housing Commission, which will be uniquely responsive to the housing needs and challenges of Inuit living within the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area.

Open Houses will be held in Nain and Hopedale to provide Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement an opportunity to meet with the Director of Housing, Brenna Jarrar, and to discuss the work that is currently underway.

The Open Houses will be held in Nain at the Illusuak Centre on Monday, August 29, 2022 at 6pm, and in Hopedale on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the Nanuk Centre at 6pm.

The Nunatsiavut Government strongly encourages while attending the Open Houses physical distancing, the use of non-medical mask, and hand sanitizing upon entering the buildings.

Nunatsiavut Youth Representative (Audio)

The National Inuit Youth Council are looking for a Nunatsiavut youth representative.

Kim Oliver is the Regional Youth Services Manager.

She says they are looking for a new representative who would advocate for the youth in Nunatsiavut.

She adds that herself and two staff will go through the applications and select the appropriate candidate.

Makkovik News August 1979 (Audio)

The kinatuinnamut ilingajuk magazine has some interesting stories within Labrador.

In late August 1979, there was an update on the communities of Makkovik and Postville on their fishing seasons and other news.

For example, Lizzie Evans was the first person to have passed Grade 11 in Makkovik.

Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament

The 4th Annual Tom C Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament was a big success this year in Hopedale.

We spoke with Hannah Winters who is the organizer for the event.

She says they had 12 teams registered this year.

Winters says the dart tournament began on Friday evening at 6pm at the Nanuk Center, and on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

The winners for this year’s tournament are as follows: first place team went to Buds dart team, they shared $2000, hoodies and a trophy.

Second place winners were the Half and Half dart team, they shared $1000 and had long sleeve t-shirts and third place winners were the Slippery Darts team they shared $600 and t-shirts.

Winters says she would like to thank everyone for being a part of this years Tom C Memorial Dart tournament, and a big thanks to the kamatsiatet Committee who helped fundraised.

Inuttitut Master/Apprentice Program

The Language and Culture team is offering their annual program that aims to teach participants Inuttitut from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet.

Start date will be September 2022 and will end in March of 2023.

You can apply individually, or you can apply for your whole family to be taught Inuttitut by a Master, apprentice will also be compensated.
