Food Supplement and Cleaning Supplies Programs Extended

The Nunatsiavut Government is advising Beneficiaries of the Labrador Land Claims Agreement that the Food Supplement ad the Cleaning Supplies programs will be extended to March 31, 2023. The programs were not designed to be permanent and will end on April 1, 2023.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to prepare for when the programs end, and to make adjustments (both financially and personally) to help ease the transition away from the support offered through these initiatives.

No support programs will be available after March 31, 2023.

Sustainable Nunatsiavut Futures Project (Audio)

Sustainable Nunatsiavut Futures Project is a project with about 70 people and 13 partners.

Kate Ortenzi is Marine Biology student with Dalhousie University.

Caroline Nochasak is the Inuit Research Coordinator for Nain.

They says the go pro project is new to the Sustainable Nunatsiavut futures project and will be starting September 6, 2022.

Anyone interested in borrowing the go pros while gone off fishing or hunting are welcome to do so.

MusicNL Announce Nominees

MusicNL has announced the 2022 Award Nominees on Friday morning.

Music Celebration Week will take place at the Rotary Arts Centre in Corner Brook from October 26-29th.

Leading the way are Ife Alaba, Rachael Cousins, Nick Earle and the Reckless Heart, and Jason Benoit with 5 nominations followed by Deantha Edmunds, Kubasonics, Mick Davis and Thin Love, Florian Hoefner, Quote the Raven with 4 nominations each.

VOCM’s Greg Smith and K-Rock’s Chris Batstone have been nominated for Media Person of the year.

The Celebration of 30 years of support for the music sector, MusicNL will celebrate and honor the best in class. Featuring over 30 diverse categories. This press conference will also feature 2 performances by MusicNL members Jason Benoit and Nico Paulo.

MusicNL plans to grow the sector through partnerships and collaboration, provincially, nationally and internationally with one goal: to help its members succeed. It was live streamed on Youtube and Facebook.

Monkeypox Update

The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with public health partners to investigate cases in Canada.

Latest update dated Friday, August 26 this year. Total count of confirmed cases in Monkeypox by the province or territory:

In Canada on that date was 1228.

PCAC is continuing to collect and analyze epidemiological information reported by the province and territories to help define the national scope of the of the investigation and to determine if there are any increased health risks to people in Canada.

Going forward, case numbers may change as provinces and territories continue to receive confirmatory results from PCAC’s National Microbiology Laboratory.

On an ongoing basis, provinces and territories are receiving cases data in their jurisdictions and those that meet the case definition will be reported to PCAC to be included in the National Investigation.

Food Supplement Program

The last day for the Food Supplement Program will be on Tuesday, September 23rd. There will be one more monthly mail out cards mid-September.

At this time, they are not sure if there will be more funding from Nunatsiavut Government through the Federal Government.

Master Apprentice Instructor (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking a Master Inuttitut instructor in both communities of Rigolet and Makkovik.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Coordinator for Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the program will start in September and end in March and are accepting families, individuals usually adults.

She adds that this year, they may have two apprentices and they will get paid during this program.

Jens Haven School Update

The Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain is still hiring for some vacant positions.

Juanita Skanes is the Vice-Principal.

She posted on their webpage that the Grade 9 homeroom has not been assigned yet. We hope to have more information once something comes up later.

Torngat Secretariat

Torngat Wildlife, Plants and Fisheries Secretariat said yesterday, last year they brought their geese event to Rigolet, Postville, Makkovik, Hopedale and Nain and got to chat about geese to 150 people last fall.

They will implement all the work they had talked about by putting 25 GPS collars on lesser geese outside Hopedale.

These collars are extremely rugged and light and they are solar powered and will keep battery life throughout the migration of the geese

They will soon be finding out where the lesser geese spend their time in their year.

There will be more updates on this project and what to do if you harvest a collared or branded bird, as the field work begins in September.

Pauktuutit to New Zealand

Pauktuutit, Inuit Women’s Association President, Geri Sharpe is visiting New Zealand as part of a Canadian delegation led by the Honorable Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu.

During this visit Gerri and the Canadian delegation are meeting with Maori and New Zealand Government leaders and representatives to reinforce the two countries and their shared commitment to working with Indigenous people to forge a better life and future.
