Inuktitut Language Lessons

The Nunatsiavut Language and Culture team is offering its annual Master Apprentice Program that aims to teach Inuktitut.

Community of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet and Postville begin teaching drop in introductory Inuktitut lessons.

Here are the Master Inuktitut Instructors:

Nain – Joan Dicker, starts Monday & Wednesday at 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Illusuak Centre
Hopedale – Vacant
Makkovik – Katie Hay
Postville – Alanna Edmunds, starts Sept 9, 12, and 14 at the Rec. Hall
Rigolet – Linda Palliser

COVID-19 Micro-Business and Artist Program Re-Launched

The Nunatsiavut Government is announcing the re-launched of the COVID-19 micro-business and artist program for a second round of funding. The program seeks to mitigate financial pressures and allows registered Inuit micro-business and professional artists to strengthen operations and increase business viability.

The divisions of economic development and tourism are delivering the program, which is funded by the Indigenous community business funds through Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).

Successful applicants from the first round of the program do not need to reapply and will receive an additional $2,500 for micro-business and $1,000 for artists. New applicants must apply and may be eligible for a non-repayable contribution for up to $7,500 for micro-business and $3,000 for artist.

Funds are designated for registered Inuit micro-business and artist beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. Applications will be reviewed on a “first come, first served” basis, with limited funding available.

Eligible criteria:

• Applicants must be a beneficiary of Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

• For the program, a micro-business is a business that operates on a small scale, with 1-4 employees and/or revenues less than $250,000 annually.

• For this program, an artist is someone who attended or provided products for organized conferences/tradeshows in the past.

• Applicants must have experience lost revenue or increased costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Applicants must be an operational business that generates sales and has been active in 2020/2021.

Nomination of Candidate for Councillors

Nominations of seven (7) candidates for the Inuit Community Council of the Community Government elections for the municipality of Nain will be received between the hours of 9am to 4pm starting on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 to Tuesday September 27, 2022 at the Nain Inuit Community Office.

Nominations shall be in writing and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the Proposer and Seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the Candidate, who shall also sign signifying his or her acceptance of the nomination.

During the aforesaid dates with the exception of the Inuit Community Council are as follow:

1. Eligible to be enrolled on the A voters roll and/or the B voters roll in an election in the community in which he or she is nominated to serve as a councillor.

2. Canadian Citizen of the full age of nineteen (19) years

3. Ordinarily resident in the community or area for at least six (6) months prior to the date set for nomination.

*One seat on Inuit Community Council reserved for new residence (B voters list).

The election, if required, will take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 between the hours of 8am and 8pm at polling booths to be located at the Nain Inuit Community Government office.

Labrador Marine Inc.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay- Labrador Marine Inc. today announced the deadline for the acceptance of freight and cargo shipments at the port of Goose Bay to ensure guaranteed delivery to coastal ports this season. Commercial and residential freight must be received by Thursday, November 10 at 7pm to guarantee delivery.

The deadline applies to both the north and south coast service.

“We encourage early delivery of freight to the Goose Bay terminal,” says LMI General Manager Capt. Austin Daley, “in order to ensure that food supplies and other essential goods are delivered to each port before the service ends for the season.”

Necessary work is about to begin on repairs to the dock in Nain. There will be no disruption to the service provided by LMI.

“We have been in constant contact with the contractors and have an agreement that the Kamutik W will operate on schedule,” Captain Daley says. “That is good news for all the passengers. There will be no deviation from our current schedule while the repairs are taking place. Repairs are scheduled to be completed in early 2023.”

Emergency Meeting in Hopedale (Audio)

There was an emergency Assembly meeting held in Hopedale earlier this week.

Bryan Winters is the Nunatsiavut Assembly Speaker.

He says the meeting went very well with lots of great questions about what impact it’s going to have on the area.

The sitting was held in order to approve the drilling as part of the Nain Airstrip pre-feasibility study.

Winters adds that they also had the opportunity to swear in the 3 AngajukKât who were acclaimed to their positions.

Update on Dead Birds

Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development advises the Canadian Wildlife Health Corporation confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza in 2 different samples in Manitoba.

Samples from several snow geese were collected in southeastern Manitoba near Waskada and a single sample from a bald eagle was collected in the Dauphin area. A sample from each location was tested positive. For highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1. To date, no cases of avian influenza have been detected in poultry flocks in Manitoba.

Cases of HPAI H5N1 have been confirmed in a Canadian province and the United States. Including jurisdictions immediately south of Manitoba in North Dakota and Minnesota along the route for spring migratory birds returning to Manitoba.

The risk of avian influenza to human health is low. There are no known cases transmission of this strain of the virus from birds to humans in North America.

This strain of avian influenza does not pose a food safety risk. Manitoba poultry and eggs are safe to eat. When proper handling and cooking take place. Regular food safety and hygiene precautions should be followed when preparing wild game. Hunters should avoid eating birds that are visibly ill.

Although the risk of transmission is low of avian influenza to humans is low, people should not touch the birds or wildlife with their bare hands. Protective eyewear and masks are recommended as an additional precaution. Hands should be thoroughly washed before and after with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer. If a dead bird has to be handled, gloves should be worn, and the dead bird placed in a bag.

Hard copies of late Tenders considered or evaluated. Tenders will remain valid for 30 days from the closing date, Wednesday, September 28 this year, despite anything to the contrary on a tender bid, and must be in English or Inuktitut.

The Nunatsiavut Government may not accept the lowest or any tender. Bidders comply with all applicable laws.

The Nunatsiavut Government reserves the right to award this order in part or in full, on the basis of Tenders received unless a bidder specifies that its Tender is valid only for the complete order.

Queen Elizabeth ll Not Well

Queen Elizabeth ll is under medical supervision as health concerns grow.

The Queen is 96 years old and has not been hospitalized and is at the Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

The Queen’s doctors said they are concerned about her health.

Her health seems to be deteriorating sharply today Thursday. Yesterday, Wednesday, September 7, she had abruptly cancelled a virtual meeting with members of her Privy Council after her doctors advised her to rest.

Makkovik Fish Landings

The Makkovik fish plant is working on a lot of turbot and processing them.

Angel Chaulk is the Clerk.

She says a total of 281,490 lbs have been landed to date.

There are two turbot long liners fishing and 25 workers working in the fish plant.

The Nain fish plant is still under clean up and it’s the last week for the plant workers.

It is also the last week to buy fish products of what is left to buy.

SmartICE Update (Audio)

SmartICE held their open house back in July the 27th for their employment readiness and youth training development program.

Rex Holwell Jr is the Northern Production Lead.

He says he had two youth who finished the program, they were Sherilyn Solomon and Aaron Obed from Nain.

He adds that the program was up and running for 5 weeks for 20 hours a week.

Holwell helped them build their resumes, financial literacy, online training, WHMIS, hazard recognition for workers, health and safety for workers, first aid (emergency first aid).
