Increase in Income Support

The Provincial Government recognizes the overall cost of living for people currently throughout NL and across the country.

To help address these immediate pressures, Honorable John C. Abbot, Minister of Children, Seniors, and Social Development, announced a 5% increase in the Income Support basic effective on Tuesday, November 1st for those receiving Income Support.

Meanwhile, the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development is reviewing the Income Support Program, which provides for food, shelter, and necessities, as well as some supplementary benefits such as vision care to approximately 20,500 eligible households across the province.

Through an amendment to the Income and Employment Support Regulations, the 5% increase in Income Support basic rates will give some help with the high cost of food, clothing, and other necessities.

The increase in the Income Support basic rate also supports several ongoing initiatives, including the recommendations of the Health Accord, and responds to what is being heard during the public engagement process to inform the development of a Social and Economic Well Being Plan for NL.

The Postville Inuit Community Government has a lot of projects on the go in their community.

Glenn Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for the community of Postville.

He says that the AngajukKâk and Inuit Community Government members election took place this month also the mosquito unblock fly program has been proposed, if they get funding for this program it will start this month of October.

Hockey Canada Organization Down

Hockey Canada’s CEO, and including the whole board of directors leave organization amid scandal after facing fierce sexual assaults.

The National Organization announced the departures in a statement on Tuesday after hearing months of calls for leadership changes within the body, and seeing its major sponsors walk away over the weekend.

Canada Hockey’s board announced departure of chief executive officer Scott Smit. The entire board also agreed to step down to make room new slate of directors.

The statement said an interim management committee will be put in place which will guide the organization until no later than a newly constituted appoints a new CEO to lead the organization. Further mor, Hockey Canada said the board will ask the members to select a new slate of directors no later than an upcoming virtual election, which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17.

The current board of directors will not seek re-election and will fulfill its fiduciary until such time as a new board is selected.

NL Reported Cases

NL reports 3 more deaths due to COVID-19 and hospitalizations have increased.

10 people are in hospital, up 2 from last week with 1 in critical care.

1 person was in their 80’s, and 1 was in their 70’s and 1 was in their 60’s, all 3 were in the Eastern Region.

The province also reported that 171 new cases of the virus, 23 on Thursday, 27 on Friday, 26 on Saturday, 34 on Sunday, 16 on Monday, 20 on Tuesday and 25 today, Wednesday.

Those numbers however, don’t accurately represent the true spread of COVID-19 in the province since public health only includes data from positive tests administered by the health authorities.

Seniors Advocate Session

Susan Walsh and the Office of the Seniors Advocate in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government will be conducting a public engagement session.

The session will be held on Tuesday, October 18 this year at the Nunatsiavut Government Building from 2-3:30pm.

It will be open to the public and all seniors are welcome.

The sessions will include health care, transportation, cost of living, long term care and more.

Teacher Organization Coming Together

Teachers’ Organizations across Atlantic Canada and Nunavut are coming together to outline the challenges educators are facing across the country.

In honor of World Teachers’ Day, the council of the Atlantic Provinces and Territory Teachers’ Organizations, which includes Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nunavut have issued a joint statement to call on the government to meet the needs of educators.

They say that the importance of teachers have been highlighted by the pandemic, however, it has also exacerbated the issues teachers face.

With a teaching shortage and a lack of support staff, they say many students will not have access to rich educational experience. As well, they are calling increased mental health supports for teachers facing stress under the conditions.

Nain NEC Open House

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement are welcome to attend an Open House to meet with the President and members of the Nunatsiavut Executive Council.

The Open House will take place tomorrow Thursday, October 13 at 7pm at the Illusuak Cultural Centre Auditorium.

Nunatsiavut Government has announced that there will be Geotechnical test pitting activities within Makkovik Subdivision.

Tests pits are small holes dug prior to help ensure suitable ground conditions to build larger building projects.

26th Annual Jobe J Volleyball Tournament

The 26th Annual Jobe J Tournament will be going ahead in Hopedale once again.

It will be held on the weekend of Friday, November 11th, 2022, at the Nanuk Centre.

Players per team will consist of 6 and a maximum of 7 in both men and women divisions, and is for ages 14 and up.

The awards, medals and apparel for the tournament have now been ordered and the admission fee is $20 per player.

The deadline to register your teams is November 9.

Flight Training Starting in Nain

5 Wing Goose Bay is doing flight training starting today.

444 Combat Support Squadron will be in flight in the area until Thursday.

The training will involve helicopter and personnel working out of the Nain airport with two flights taking off throughout the day and landing in areas of northern Labrador.

The squadron says all flight training will be conducted at least 500 ft above ground and will avoid areas with cabins and wildlife such as caribou and migratory birds.
