TauttukKonik Book Launch Presentation (Audio)

There was a book launched called, “TauttukKonik, Looking Back” by the Nunatsiavut Creative group, Andrea Proctor and Candace Cochrane last week.

It took place at the NG Boardroom and was a very good turnout.

The book is about how Labrador Inuit lived back then and will be used for educational purposes.

Last IlinniaKatigennik Program For The Year

The OKâlaKatiget Society has started playing Christmas carols as of yesterday Sunday, December 11, 2022.

This means that tomorrow December 13 is the last day to air the IlinniaKatigennik Program until the new year.

The IlinniaKatigennik will be back on the air on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

In the meantime, anyone wanting to record any stories or sing Inuttitut songs are welcome to do so.

We would also like to remind everyone that any adults wanting to record any Inuttitut songs or stories will be compensated of $50 for your time and will be done over the phone.

Nunatsiavut Housing Commission Applications Available

Applications for Nunatsiavut Housing Commission are now available.

Subsidized housing is long-term housing where the rent is set based on Nunatsiavut Housing Commission policy.

The Nunatsiavut Housing Commission uses this information to select tenants when units become available.

There are more people applying for housing than vacant units. It is not possible to predict when units may be available.

Everyone may apply and is eligible for Affordable Rental Housing; however, you will be prioritized for the Program if your household meets one of the following conditions:

One of the following household groups:
Family
Senior age 55 and up
Person with disabilities
Single people or couples at risk of homelessness
On a fixed-income
Reside in Nunatsiavut
Meet residency requirements
Are able to live independently

The NHC may complete additional checks to assess a household’s ability to uphold the obligations of a tenancy agreement, which may include:

Updated information on household members, income, and assets
Reference checks
Personal interviews
Consent for a credit or criminal record check

Successful applicants will be required to sign a tenancy agreement and addendum covering topics on pets, smoking, crime-free housing, etc.

Christmas Concerts Across Nunatsiavut

Across the Nunatsiavut region, schools along the coast are getting ready for their 2022-2023 Christmas concerts.

Students will be released for the holidays from December 22, 2022 and will be going back to school on January 3rd, 2023.

The Amos Comenius Memorial School of Hopedale will be having their concert tomorrow, starting at 6pm and will be having a Christmas parent teacher night on Friday, December 16.

The J.C. Erhardt Memorial School of Makkovik and the Northern Lights Academy in Rigolet will be having their concert on December 15, starting at 6:30pm.

In Nain, the concert for Jens Haven Memorial School will be on Friday, December 16.

The B.L. Morrison Memorial of Postville will have their concert on December 20, 2022.

Service Canada Coming to Nain

Service Canada will be coming to Nain from December 13 to 14, 2022 to provide services with the Government of Canada.

They will be available from 10:30am to 4:30pm on December 13, and from 8:30am to 4:30pm on December 14, at the Nanuk Land Corporation upstairs of the Sandbanks building on 17 Sandbanks Road.

EI, social insurance number, passport, Canada pension plan and old age security services will be available.

Service Canada will answer questions, guide clients through government of Canada applications and forms. They will help you better understand and access the programs and services available to you.

Nain Council Projects (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is quite busy working on their projects.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk.

He says at this time of the year is always a time before Christmas.

Rigolet DHSD Christmas Activities (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social Development in Rigolet has started their Christmas activities.

Lorraine Allen is the Team Leader.

She says tonight, families can go to the community hall at 6pm to have a paint night.

The staff who are involved in the programs are the Mental Health and Addictions worker, the Community Health workers, Public Health nurse and aid, and the Child First Initiative Worker.

Coastal Community Freezers

The community freezers in each of the Nunatsiavut got some food to give away for their respective communities.

The Nain community freezer has some char and seal meat.

There’s some char at the Hopedale community freezer.

In Makkovik, there’s cod fish and char, and in Postville, they have salmon, char, cod, and a variety of meats bought from their local stores.

There were some whole cod, whole chicken , ground beef and pork chops for the community freezer in Rigolet.

Come Home 2022 Draws to a Close

As Come Home 2022 draws to a close, the Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is congratulating communities across the province for their participation and contributions in making the celebration a success.

To support communities in preparing for Come Home Year, the Municipal Come Home Year Celebration Grant was created. It provided $355,000 in grants to municipalities and Inuit Community Governments to help them prepare for Come Home Year celebrations. 

As part of Come Home 2022, special events took place in over 170 communities, ranging from concerts, theatre, sporting and comedy events, to music festivals and events celebrating diversity.

Recipes and Stories Wanted for Calendar

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism are looking for recipes on bakeapples, pitsik/iKalujak making, or rhubarb.

They are also looking for stories for Nalujuit, Polar bear hunting, or trapping in the country.

If your story or recipe is featured in their calendar, you will get an awesome promo item from their department.

The deadline for stories or recipes is Tuesday, December 13, 2022.
