Ice Conditions

The ice conditions on the North Coast are starting to freeze over with the cold temperatures.

We spoke with Rex Holwell Jr., the Manager for Nunatsiavut Operations with SmartICE.

Holwell says his team traveled by snowmobile to Taktok pond on Friday, February 3, 2023.

He says the ice conditions are now approximately a foot and seven inches.

They had snowmobile issues during the trip so they didn’t go as far as they planned.

We also spoke with Ian Winters who is the Conservation Officer for Hopedale.

Winters says the ice conditions seems to be more rougher after the storm.

He adds that people are still traveling up north, but no one is traveling down to Postville or Makkovik yet due to ice conditions.

In Postville, we spoke with Samantha Jacque who is the Conservation Officer.

Jacque says the ice conditions are now good to travel on, but advises to be careful of the bad rapids that was caused by the wind storm recently.
