Please be advised that the Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker George R. Pearkes will be conducting Icebreaking operation in the Labrador area beginning today, Monday, June 13, 2022.
The icebreaker will be escorting the ferry Kamutik W, commencing in the Smokey Island area and proceeding north towards Nain.
Stops include Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale, Natuashish, and Nain.
The icebreaker will be leaving an open water track behind it as it transits the area. Please stay a safe distance away from the vessel as it moves.
Request everyone take any action you deem appropriate to notify residents of the area who may be using the ice for any purpose.
“CCG informs the local communities of the inherit risks of icebreaking activities. CCG cannot have absolute control of the behavior of the ice. Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working. This can cause risks for the safety of people and property. The public is warned to act accordingly, for example refrain from walking on the ice, approaching the icebreaker or its track, remove mobile equipment in advance of icebreaking activities, protect permanently non-moveable property, etc.”
They also started accepting freight at 1pm today at the Nain dock for anyone who would like to ship any items; they will be open until 5pm.
