Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe announced last Friday that Tony Andersen has tendered has resigned as First Minister and Minister of Nunatsiavut Affairs.
“Mr. Andersen has advised me that he is unable to effectively carry out his duties as First Minister because of personal reasons,” says President Lampe. “While I am disappointed in his decision to resign, I fully understand his reasoning for doing so.”
Mr. Andersen will continue to serve as Ordinary Member for Nain in the Nunatsiavut Assembly.
The President also announced that effective immediately, Melva Williams, Ordinary Member for Rigolet and Minister of Education and Economic Development, will assume the role as Acting First Minister and Minister of Nunatsiavut Affairs on an interim basis.
As per Labrador Inuit Constitution, the Nunatsiavut Assembly must nominate an Ordinary Member for appointment as First Minister within 28 days from the time Mr. Andersen’s resignation. A date has yet to be determined when the Assembly will meet to choose a new First Minister.
