Torngat Mountains Caribou Herd Survey

The Torngat Secretariat staff and crew has been in Saglek since March 13th, 2021 conducting a caribou survey on the Torngat Mountains caribou herd.

Aaron Dale is the Policy Analyst for Torngat Secretariat, he says that he will be flying to the Torngat Mountains tomorrow.

Dale says when the Torngat Herd was counted last in 2017, it was estimated that there were 1326 animals in the area.

Dale adds that there are 4 crew members observing and other support staff at the base camp maintaining and moving supplies.

He says that the survey was supposed to be held last year but because of COVID-19 this wasn’t able to happen.

There are two separate crews this time around counting the animals.

Dale says that there are many partners involved, including: The Nunatsiavut Government, Makivik, Parks Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Government, and the Quebec Government.

The survey will be concluded around April 10th, 2021.

And we will have more update when the survey on the Torngat Mountains Caribou Herd is completed.
