ITK president, Natan Obed congratulates Jordin Tootoo on his retirement from the NHL

On October 19 2018, Jordin Tootoo officially announced his retirement on twitter, saying “after 220 regular season games with the wheat kings and 723 games in the NHL I have decided to retire from the NHL to focus on giving back to the indigenous community”

Obed says on the ITK site, “Jordin, through his play on the ice and openness to talk about difficult issues off it, is an inspirational role model.

I appreciate his commitment to promoting wellness and mental health through sport, and i look forward to areas where we can collaborate in improving outcomes for Inuit in Canada”

“Jordin has shown Inuit that we can come from small Inuit Nunangat communities and succeed at the highest levels of our chosen sport.

Thank you for persevering when there were many barriers in your path.”
