ITK to hold 2018 annual General meeting and presidential Election

AGM and Election will be live-streamed; 2018 ITK Awards, including Inuit Cultural Repatriation Award, presented to Inuit recipients

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will hold its Annual General Meeting and presidential election in Inuvik this week. For the first time, ITK will live-stream the AGM and election proceedings. Simultaneous translation will be available at the meeting; the live-stream of the meeting will be in the language spoken by delegates at the table.

Each year, the ITK AGM is held in one of the four Inuit regions, this year, in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. ITK would like to thank the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) for being gracious hosts for the 2018 AGM.

Today, August 14, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will present the ITK Awards during a community feast in Inuvik. ITK worked with the IRC to recognize Inuit who are contributing to their communities with the following award categories: Advancement of Culture and Language, Community Volunteer, Advancement of Youth, and Advancement of Elders. The 2018 Inuit Cultural Repatriation Award will be presented to recognize the repatriation of local Inuit culture and history. The award was given for the first time in 2017 to the Nunatsiavut Government and the Field Museum in Chicago together for their work to repatriate the remains of 22 Inuit stolen from their graves in 1927 by a curator working on behalf of the museum.

On August 15, ITK will begin its Annual General Meeting at the Inuvik Community Corporation boardroom. The event will be livestreamed starting at 9 a.m. MDT. The link will be shared on ITK’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/inuittapiriitkanatami. The proposed agenda includes discussions on children in care and the development of federal child and family services legislation; the interim process and development of an Inuit-specific equivalent to Jordan’s Principle known as the Child First Initiative; and ITK’s election rules and procedures. ITK’s 2018 annual report, including financial statements, will be also presented at this meeting.

On August 16, the AGM will continue to be live streamed. The final item on the AGM agenda is the ITK presidential election, which will begin at 1 p.m. MDT.
