As part of the Residential School Survivors Settlement Agreement, the Federal Government organized and paid for retired Judge James Igloliorte to visit survivors in their communities.
Survivors were sent a letter dated January 31th, 2018 advising that Retired Judge Igloliorte has been contracted by the government to record their stories.
It has been advised that the hearings are taking place in February, March and April of this year.
The residential school survivors are encouraged to attend, and hopefully tell their individual stories, either publically or privately.
This will be a unique opportunity to memorialize not just your own stories, but those of your fellow survivors who passed on, as well as the stories of the communities and your families.
It is important that they document the history of these institutions, so that the world will know what happened, and so the stories will not disappear.
It would be impossible for Judge Igloliorte to visit every community.
But here is a list of the current intended NL visits:
In Cartwright: February 13-15.
Hopedale: Feb. 20-22.
Postville: Feb. 25-27.
Ottawa: March 2-4.
Happy Valley Goose Bay: March 9-11.
North West River: March 12-14.
Makkovik: March 22-24.
Rigolet: March 27-29.
Nain: On April 12-14.
and in St. John’s: April 27-29.
OK Radio will have more from Judge Igloliorte on tomorrow’s AtjiKangitut.
