The Makkovik Inuit Community Government has been busy since mid-July, employing up to 24 local people in a variety of projects.
Terry Rice is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Makkovik ICG.
The Makkovik ICG received funding to complete a Craft Making Project under the Makkovimiut Trust and the Provincial Government Community Enhancement Employment Program for employment assistance of plant workers.
Rice says there are variety of workers such as 5 trail cutting workers 6 construction employees, and 13souvenir makers.
He says providing up to 4200 hours of employment for 13 local people who did not obtain enough hours working at the local plant this year.
Rice says souvenir items will be the main focus of this 12 week program in order to prepare for the upcoming tourist season.
The souvenir project began November 16, 2009 as a means of creating a variety of crafts and souvenir items such as carvings, bracelets, charms, scarf’s, mitts, etc. for sale during the 2010 tourism season.
He adds to start the project the workshop was funded by the Labrador Craft Marketing Agency and Nunatsiavut Government.
The workshop was instructed by Dinah Andersen who introduced the workshop to participants to carving using basic tools and techniques. Comments
