Nain Dog Tests Negative for Rabies, Makkovik Fox Tests Positive

A Nain dog suspected to have rabies has tested negative while a fox from the Makkovik area tested positive for the disease.

Dr. Hugh Whitney is the Chief Veterinarian for the province.

He says a Nain dog suspected to have rabies has tested negative.

A family put the dog down after the animal showed signs of the disease last month.

Dr. Whitney says a red fox found in the Makkovik area did test positive for rabies.

A sample of the animal was sent to his office at the end of April.

Dr. Whitney says the fox had porcupine quills on its face and chest as well as inside of its mouth.

The disease was confirmed in the animal a little over a week ago.

This is the third confirmed case of rabies in northern Labrador this spring.

Two other foxes from the Nain and Hebron areas also tested positive.

Dr. Whitney says the total number of cases in Labrador this year is now at 15.
