NG Opposes Recommendations to List Caribou Herds as Endangered (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government (NG) opposes a recommendation to list the George River and Torngat Mountains caribou herds as endangered.

Darryl Shiwak is the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for NG.

He says the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) made a recommendation to the provincial government to list both caribou herds as endangered.

Shiwak says a letter was sent to NG President Johannes Lampe in early December regarding listing the caribou herds as endangered.

He says at this point in time, the Nunatsiavut Government is waiting for a decision from the Provincial Government, and it may take up to next week before they hear anything.

Shiwak says NG’s response to the Province was that they don’t agree that the herd should be listed as endangered.
