National Aboriginal Day message from President Lampe

As we celebrate National Aboriginal Day it’s important for us, as Labrador Inuit, to remember those who have gone before us – those who have helped shape who we are as a people; those who have led the way for us to be here today.

As a people we have persisted for thousands of years, through good times and through bad. Through it all we have managed to persevere in protecting our unique identity, our traditions, our heritage, culture and way of life.

By celebrating this day we are celebrating ourselves, our place in history, our ancestors and our future.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that it is the Government of Canada’s intention to rename this day as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

I join all of Canada’s Indigenous peoples as we reflect on the contributions we have collectively made, and continue to make, to our nation.

I am proud to be a Labrador Inuk, proud of what we have accomplished as a people and excited about our future.
