ITK and NG Reps Attending United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Representatives from Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Nunatsiavut Government are attending the 16th session of The United Nations of the Declaration of Indigenous Peoples.

The group includes ITK President Natan Obed, NG President Johannes Lampe, and NG Language Program Coordinator Silpa Suarak.

The Declaration sets out the individual and collective rights of indigenous peoples, as well as their rights to culture, identity, language, employment, health, education and other issues.

It also “emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions, and to pursue their development in keeping with their own needs and aspirations.”

The session is being held in New York City, which was the original place where the declaration was adopted back in September, 13th, 2007.

It is scheduled to run until May 5, 2017.

We hope to learn more from NG representatives when they return home.
