Harper Government Still Running Canada Post, Says CUPW

The President of a local Canadian Union of Postal Workers says the Harper Government is still running Canada Post.

A public forum was held at the Easter Seals building last night on the future of Canada Post.

Dozens of postal workers and locals gathered to have their comments and suggestions recorded by St. John’s East MP Nick Whelan, who will take the results to Ottawa as the Liberals begin working on fixing some of the issues with the Crown Corporation.

Craig Dyer is the President of CUPW Local 126. Dyer says the Liberal government campaigned that they would hold public consultations and would deal with the issues at Canada Post. He says it’s the first time he’s gotten to voice his concerns to a Member of Parliament.

People raised concerns about delivery to rural areas and competitive pricing, but the biggest issue for most was with Canada Post management. Dyer says the Liberal government needs to take consultations with the public seriously.

He says the union believes the Harper Government is still running Canada Post.

He says Canada Post is already profitable, and that if the government addresses the management issue, it will resolve a lot of conflict.
