Bear Monitors Under Shoot to Kill Orders

A team of bear monitors has been put in place again this year for the community of Nain.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

Dicker says that the first point of contact is with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nain.

The RCMP then will contact the bear monitors that are designated to shoot down the bears.

Dicker adds that Town Manager Beni Andersen can also be contacted at 922-1841, or Joe can also be contacted at 922-2159.

Dicker would also like to ask the residents of Nain, if you happen to get a seal and if you are skinning the seal down at the beach you are asked to sink the remaining carcass using rocks.

This is to avoid the bears getting attracted to the smell.

According to Dicker, the two bear monitors will take down any bears that are reported for the public’s safety, especially around the new Jeremias Sillitt Centre.
