NHL Stanley Cup To Visit North

Attention all hockey fans: The Stanley Cup and National Hockey League (NHL) are visiting Yellowknife and 6 other communities in Nunavut.

Scotia Bank and its partners, the NHL, Project North, First Air and Canadian Tire Corporation are inviting northern communities to a special celebration of hockey starting today, and going until Saturday, April 30th.

The iconic Stanley Cup is visiting 7 communities with NHL Alumni guests Lanny McDonald and Mark Napier.

Today they are in Kuglutuk, and the celebration starts at 12:15, and goes to 2 pm at the Recreational Complex.

Scotia Bank and Canadian Tire will donate 25 bags of new hockey equipment to the local children.

They will also get to take photos with the Stanley Cup and meet NHL Alumni Lanny McDonald and Mark Napier.

The group will be in Resolute Bay (Qausuittuq) this evening where local hockey fans will have an opportunity to get their photos taken with the Cup and autographs from the guests.

The event takes place at the ATCO South Camp Inn from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.

Tomorrow, Friday, April 29, they will be in Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk) featuring a cultural presentation with throat singing on the sea ice, weather permitting, from 11:15 am to 1:15 pm.

Community members are invited to participate in a special skate on the outdoor rink, lead by McDonald and Napier.

They travel to Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) and parade from the airstrip to the beach with the Stanley Cup, the Alumni, RCMP, fire department and local hockey fans. The event goes from 3 to 5 pm.

They will have the Cup down at the beach, and take photos of it near an iceberg.

They travel to Igloolik on Saturday, April 30, where Scotia bank and the NHL host a celebration of hockey.

The fans can get photos taken with the Cup and autographs from the Alumni.

The event will be at the community hall from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Scotia Bank and Canadian Tire will donate 25 bags of hockey equipment to the local community centre.

Young fans from Killinik High School will host the special visitors when the Stanley Cup and the NHL Alumni visit their school from 2:20 to 4:15 pm on Saturday in Cambridge Bay (IKaluktutiak).

The final stop of the visit is the Legislature Assembly in Yellowknife, where the community members can get their photo taken with the Cup and get autographs from the NHL Alumni.

This event takes place this Saturday evening from 8:30 to 10 pm.
