Heated Public Information Session On TB Takes Place (Audio)

A heated public information session on tuberculosis was held in Nain last night.

The meeting took place from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Jens Haven Memorial School gym.

There wasn’t a huge turnout for the event, but the people in attendance were very vocal.

Nunatsiavut Government President Sarah Leo called for and organized the meeting, and was in attendance, along with Nain AngajukKak Joe Dicker.

Dr. Gabe Woolam, Chief of Staff of Labrador Grenfell Health, and Tina Buckle, Community Health Nursing Coordinator for NG, were delivering information to the public about the outbreak.

Jane Broomfield, Acting Nursing Supervisor at Nain Community Clinic, and Greg Flowers, NG Minister of Health and Social Development, were also attending.

There were many questions about taking x-rays at the clinic for testing, or bringing an x-ray machine into the community.

Minister Flowers responded that NG could look into bringing in an x-ray machine for all of the North Coast communities.

The other big issue was why everyone in Nain is not being tested for TB.

Nain resident Emma Kalleo presented a petition to have everyone tested in Nain, which contained 213 signatures, to President Leo.

A heated exchange between Kalleo and President Leo ensued.
