Lower Age For Hunting Proposed

The provincial Liberal party supports the idea of lowering the age limit for hunting.

Currently, you must be 16 to hunt small game and 18 for big game.

The Federation of Hunters and Anglers wants those reduced to ages 12 and 14, respectively.

Chris Mitchelmore, MHA for The Straits-White Bay North, says the province has the strictest age limitations in the country.

He argues government regulations are deterring young people from participating.

Environment Minister Dan Crummell says government is open to changing the age restrictions.

Mitchelmore says resident hunters are taking their kids to other provinces and non-resident hunters are not bringing young people to hunt in the province.

Crummell says government is aware of the rules in other jurisdictions and it is considering changing to align with other provinces.

He says government is seriously considering changing the age limits for hunting.
