35th Annual Heritage Dog Team Race Results

The 35th annual Heritage Dog Team Race is over for another year.

6 dog team owners took part in the race in Makkovik this past Saturday.

Rachael Edmunds is one of the committee organizers.

She says the racers took off on the harbour ice at 10am.

The race run was 22 miles out of the bay.

Edmunds was also one of the 5 dog team racers.

She says when they were going out, there was quite a bit of snow and it was chilly to travel on the ice.

But it got better when they were travelling back to the community harbour.

Here are the Heritage Dog Team Race results: Buddy Morgan of Makkovik came in first; he won $ 1,500, and was awarded the Heritage Trophy Cup, and the Hubert Groves plaque.

Rachel Edmunds of Makkovik came in second, not far from Morgan, and won $1,000, and was awarded the Ron Pottle trophy, plus an additional $125.

Both of their times were about one and a half hours.

The third place winner was Andreas Jararuse of Hopedale; he won $700, and his time was 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Perry Voisey of Makkovik came in 4th with a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes, and Herbert Pijjoge of Hopedale was 5th with a time of 2 hours and 24 minutes.

Rex Voisey of Makkovik got in 6th place with a time of 2 and a half hours.
The 3 racers all received $400.

Herbert Pijjoge was awarded for the Best Looking Dog Team and pocketed an additional $125.

Edmunds says there was a potluck supper and award presentations at the community hall in the evening.

She would like to send a big thank you to the Makkovik Dog Team Race Committee for their help and support in all the fundraising.

She also thanked the residents of Makkovik for their continued support.

Edmunds says they also send a big thank you to Air Labrador for donating an air flight ticket, which the committee sold tickets on to pay for the grand prize.

She says Heather Edmunds of Makkovik was the lucky winner of the flight ticket.

Rachael Edmunds says the 36th annual Heritage Dog Team race is scheduled to take place in the community of Postville next year.

She says the Makkovik Recreation Department has completed a schedule for the Easter Games, so a Kimutsik race is planned to take place this coming Saturday.

They are already looking forward to this event, because Hopedale will be returning to take part in the race again.
