The RCMP are examining the scene of a house fire near the harbour in the community of Cartwright.

Cartwright is a small community situated on the south coast of Labrador.

Boyd Merrill is the Staff Sergeant of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in St. John’s.

In a press release this morning, Merrill says an adult couple were believed to have been in the residence when the fire was reported.

Merrill says officials have confirmed one death so far.

A full scene examination is to follow later today.

RCMP members will remain at the scene of this incident until the investigation is completed.

According to Merrill, a Forensic ID team is currently on its way from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

It is expected that the Forensic Team will find a second victim at the scene of the fire.

Local volunteer fire fighters have extinguished the blaze, which was reported in the early hours around midnight last evening.

The investigation is continuing.
