Language Nest Program Update

The Language Nest program in Nain has hired their second Language Nest worker.

We spoke with Lorraine Dicker, the Daycare Operator at Pigutsavik Center.

She says the new Language Nest worker was hired on Monday January 12, 2015.

Alice Pilgrim is the new instructor, bringing the total number of instructors to two.

Mary Tuglavina is the other instructor.

Dicker says right now they have 4 infants in the program.

The language nest is open daily Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 4:30pm.

Dicker says it is required to have parental involvement with your child at least an hour a day.

Children in the program are learning Inuktitut each day with no English spoken to them.

They learn how to make crafts, and do other activities.

Dicker says the language nest program is held in their own 2 compartments in the daycare center.

One area is for activities and the other area is for nap time.

Dicker adds that she would love to see this program go further, because it is just a pilot project right now.
