Annual Christmas Food Hampers To Be Given Soon

Christmas Food Hampers are given out each year before Christmas to low income seniors, low income families and single parents.

The Moravian Church in Rigolet has been collecting names for those that will get a Christmas food hamper this year.

Sandra Flowers says the Moravian minister will be in Rigolet this week to deliver hampers.

There will be close to 25 people receiving hampers this year.

The hampers will include a turkey, vegetables, and this year they will be providing a food voucher.

In Nain, we spoke with Elsie Russell, the Mental Health and Addiction Worker with DHSD.

Russell says this year they are giving Christmas food vouchers to low income seniors, families and single parents, widows and widowers on December 18 and 19.

This year they have 100 turkeys and a $50 food voucher from Big Land Groceries.

A Christmas card will be given to each family that receives the food vouchers.

They spent $5000 on the food vouchers this year.

Big thanks to all who donated, including the Nunatsiavut Government, DHSD, Torngat Fish Producers, Budgell’s Construction, Ray Ford Construction, Shirley and Henry Friesen, Big Land Groceries, Nain community Pentecostal Church, Nain ICG, Haynes store, D&J construction, Nunatsiavut Group of Companies, the staff from Parks Canada, Provincial Airlines and other contributors.

In Makkovik we spoke with Carol Gear, the Community Liaison Worker with Nunatsiavut Government.

She says this year they will be giving out food coupons in the mail.

54 families were given a $75 food coupon for the Lab Investments store yesterday.

The coupons went to low income families, seniors and single mothers.

Gear says big thanks to those who sent donations including Nunatsiavut Government, Nunatsiavut DHSD, Aurora Energy, Goose Sales and Services, White’s Construction, Innu Makun Airline, LAT 49 Architecture, and Makkovik ICG.

In Hopedale, the Moravian Church will be organizing the Christmas food hampers this year.

We spoke with Judy Dicker; she says they had a number of donations this year.

They ordered in turkeys, and vegetables and fruit were put in boxes for seniors 65 years and older, and also for low income families.

This year 64 families will be given a food hamper, which will be handed out today or tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who donated this year including DHSD, Nunatsiavut Torngat Fisheries, and Aurora Energy. And to local people that donated, this was a great help also.

We will speak with Melanie Gear, the Postville Inuit Community Government Town Clerk, about their Christmas food hampers tomorrow.
